Defend values and public rights

A journalist defends the accuracy of facts, the dignity of people and the public’s right to know. These commitments have a foundation beyond the newsroom: Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights protects seeking, receiving and sharing information and ideas.

The essentials

Connect daily reporting to Article 19. Seeking information, receiving it and making it available to others are not merely tasks performed for an editor. They give practical expression to a right that belongs to everyone. Verification and publication serve the public when they make that right meaningful.

Distinguish values from allegiance. Political leaders and other powerful actors may call compliance patriotism and independence betrayal. The journalist’s responsibility is neither to a government nor to its opponents, but to the public and the principles that protect it. An investigation should not arrive with a party’s conclusion already attached.

Recognise that integrity can carry a cost. Pressure and threats test the values you claim to defend. Before a sensitive publication, identify its public interest, the facts supporting it and the personal preferences that must not direct your work. Defending a right is different from defending a regime or an oppressive social order. Keep that distinction clear in your choices, sources and language.

Take it to the field

Before a sensitive publication, state its public interest in one sentence. Then separate established facts, the values you defend and personal preferences that should not guide the investigation or determine its conclusion.

Your turn

Read Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Restate it in your own words, then identify three concrete situations in your work where it applies.
